Fireplace Cleaning

No mess occurs in the house — a high-powered vacuum is on at all times.

WHAT YOU HAVE

Two kinds of fireplace, two ways to clean it.

Most South Florida fireplaces fall into one of two categories. The damper position tells you which kind you have.

FACTORY-BUILT FIREPLACES

Hundreds of variations.
One way to find the damper.

There are hundreds of different types of factory-built fireplaces. The damper sits where the smoke chamber ends and the flue begins — grab a flashlight and look up from the bottom.

Your damper will be the metal flap, usually between 8 and 10 inches round. Some are square or rectangular. They have obvious handles you push up and pull down.

Factory-built fireplaces are cleaned with softer brushes so the metal parts aren't damaged. The smoke chamber, damper, and firebox walls are cleaned with hand brushes from the bottom.

MASONRY CHIMNEYS

Older South Florida brick and mortar.
Stiffer brushes for stubborn creosote.

If your chimney is part of an older South Florida fireplace, you may have the classic brick-and-mortar chimney.

These are cleaned with stiff wire brushes for stubborn creosote, or soft nylon brushes when appropriate. The right brush depends on what's actually in the flue.

If you need fireplace chimney repairs, call to discuss the issue before booking. Sometimes nothing more is needed than a clean bill of health.

HOW JOE CLEANS YOUR FIREPLACE

No mess in the house.

01

Vacuum stays on the entire time.

A high-powered vacuum runs from the moment work begins until the last brush stroke. Soot, ash, and creosote are pulled out of the air, not into your living room.

02

Hand brushes from the bottom.

Smoke chamber, damper, firebox walls — all cleaned with hand brushes working up from the firebox. No drop cloths in the room, no airborne debris.

03

Soft brushes for factory-built.

Factory-built parts are all metallic. Softer brushes protect the surfaces. No scratched smoke chamber, no damaged damper plate.

04

Stiff or soft for masonry — it depends.

Stiff wire brushes for stubborn creosote. Soft nylon when the flue is lighter. The brush matches what's actually built up — assessed before any work begins.

05

A clean bill of health, when that's the answer.

Sometimes nothing's needed. After showing you how to use the fireplace, what tools to keep on hand, and whether you need a cap or a damper repair, you may simply get a clean bill of health — and an honest "you're fine."

Most of you do not.
